Contemporary Art Asia is a half-yearly journal of criticism concerned with the work of artists of Asian cultural background practising in Britain and internationally. It is published in Britain devoted solely to critical writing on contemporary Asian art, and it is British-based and international in scope.
The journal takes as its subject the relationship between cultural inheritance and contemporary form, across visual art, performance, dance, moving image, sound and interdisciplinary practice. It is not organised around medium or national origin, and it does not treat Asian identity as a fixed category to be illustrated. Its interest lies in how artists working from Asian cultural formations negotiate, resist, inherit and remake form in the present. The journal does not treat identity as the end point of its enquiry. It is equally concerned with what these practices become once they enter the longer trajectory of art, with what carries forward into a global present and what survives of it there.
Contemporary Art Asia is published by Contemporary Art Asia (10374552), an independent arts organisation registered in England and Wales, based in Bath.
